This is a beautifully finely knotted Afghan Samarkand carpet in a soft, dusky red with teal, cream, and tan shades. The Samarkand is an interesting concept that combines traditional design with a modern twist. They are hand-knotted in villages in northwest Afghanistan using vegetable dyes and hand-spun wool from the Karakul sheep. The production and design of these pieces stem from a group that created the designs to a specific colour palette and set the design on graph paper; the drawing and the wool are collected by Afghan weavers who cross the border into Pakistan, where they are paid a retainer. Sometime later, the weaver returns with a carpet to be paid, which then has to be finished.
The carpet's final stage in Pakistan involves many processes; initial and alignment problems may be undertaken, followed by , and . This combination of Afghan weaving and finishing in Pakistan has been a great success. These carpets are closely knotted and usually finished with an interesting and unusual bound multicoloured fringe.
